“A public wallet address means nobody can identify me.”
An address is a pseudonym, not a disguise. Exchange records, public posts, address reuse and analytics clustering can all connect it to you, and then its full history is yours.

404: Bold. The block explorer would like a word.Oof. You believed it? Bold. The block explorer would like a word.
02
“Every Zcash transaction is private.”
Zcash supports transparent transactions too, and they’re fully public. Privacy depends on using shielded addresses and wallets that support them.

404: Even I have a transparent side. We don’t talk about it.Oof. You believed it? Even I have a transparent side. We don’t talk about it.
03
“Shielded means absolutely nothing can ever be traced.”
Fully shielded transactions encrypt the sender, recipient, amount and memo. But the record, its timing and its fee are public, crossings into and out of the shield are visible, and your network, device, exchange records and habits are separate layers.

404: Shielded, yes. Magic invisibility cloak, no. I checked.Oof. You believed it? Shielded, yes. Magic invisibility cloak, no. I checked.
04
“Holding ZEC on Solana gives me native Zcash privacy.”
ZEC on Solana is a bridged token that follows Solana’s rules. Its transfers are public. Shielding only exists for native ZEC on the Zcash network.

404: That’s a ZEC costume, not ZEC armour.Oof. You believed it? That’s a ZEC costume, not ZEC armour.
05
“Privacy is only useful for people hiding wrongdoing.”
People protect their salary, rent, savings, medical costs and donations for safety and dignity. Businesses protect payroll and supplier payments. Privacy is a normal default.

404: You close the bathroom door. Suspicious? Thought not.Oof. You believed it? You close the bathroom door. Suspicious? Thought not.
06
“A wallet never reveals anything about its owner.”
On a public chain, a wallet can reveal balances, habits, likely time zone, favourite apps, event tickets and the people its owner pays.

404: Your wallet talks. A lot. Mostly about you.Oof. You believed it? Your wallet talks. A lot. Mostly about you.
07
“A zero-knowledge proof can show a transaction is valid without revealing its amount.”
That’s exactly what Zcash’s shielded proofs do. Validators confirm the values balance without seeing them.

404: Correct. Maths keeps secrets better than people do.You doubted it? Correct. Maths keeps secrets better than people do.
08
“Shielding an amount, then deshielding the same amount soon after, can make the two easy to connect.”
Both crossings are visible on their transparent side. A matching amount and tight timing make them easy to pair, whatever happened in between.

404: Right. Patterns are fingerprints. You doubted it? Right. Patterns are fingerprints.

Real-world context
Why this matters
Overconfidence is one of the most common privacy leaks. People who think they’re invisible stop being careful. The goal isn’t paranoia. It’s an accurate picture, so you can make real choices.
Key takeaways
- Pseudonymous is not anonymous.
- Zcash offers shielding, but it isn’t automatic for every transaction.
- Shielding protects on-chain details, not everything around them.
- Bridged ZEC follows the rules of the chain it lives on.
- Privacy is normal, not suspicious.

01Which word should make you most suspicious of a privacy claim?
Absolute promises are a red flag. Real privacy tools describe what they protect, and what they don’t.
02Which statement is most accurate?
On-chain details are protected. Your network, device, exchange records and behaviour are separate layers.
03Why do ordinary people want financial privacy?
The same reasons you close the curtains or cover your PIN at a cash machine. It’s normal.
