A wallet doesn’t hold coins the way a purse holds cash. Your ZEC lives on the Zcash blockchain. The wallet holds the keys that prove it’s yours, and it lets you send, receive and check your balance.

You have two big choices. Who holds the keys: you, or a company? And what does the wallet support: shielded transactions, transparent ones, or both?

Zcash wallets differ in what they support

Safety guidance
  • Shielded by defaultShields your transactions automatically. The strongest starting point for privacy.
  • Shielded or transparentLets you choose. You need to understand which one you’re using.
  • Transparent onlyWorks like Bitcoin. Your activity is public on the chain.

Educational checklist: before you hold ZEC

0 / 6

This is a learning checklist, not wallet setup. Nothing here connects to, reads or creates a wallet. For current, wallet-specific steps, use the Zcash wallet directory and your wallet’s own guide.

Custodial vs. self-custodial

With a custodial service, such as most exchange accounts, a company holds the keys. It’s convenient, but that company can see your activity, can freeze or lose funds, and may only support transparent ZEC.

With a self-custodial wallet, you hold the keys. You get full control, and full responsibility. Nobody can reset your password for you.

How recovery worksSafety guidance

Most self-custodial wallets create a recovery phrase, a list of words that can rebuild your wallet on another device. Anyone who has it controls your funds.

Some Zcash wallets also show a wallet birthday, the block height at which the wallet was created. Writing it down next to your phrase can make restoring much faster.

Protecting the phraseSafety guidance

Write it down offline and store it somewhere safe. Never keep it in screenshots, photo backups, email, chat messages or notes that sync to the cloud. Never type it into a website. Think about who else could find it, and what happens to it if something happens to you.

Official sources onlySafety guidance

Fake wallet apps appear in app stores and through search ads, and some are near-perfect copies. Start from the wallet’s official website or a maintained directory such as the Zcash ecosystem page. Check the developer name in the app store, and never install a wallet from a link in a DM.

Check addresses, and send a test firstSafety guidance

Malware can swap a copied address for an attacker’s. Before sending, compare the first and last several characters, plus a few in the middle. For meaningful amounts, a small test transaction first confirms the address and the process work. It costs an extra fee, which is usually worth paying.

Real-world context

Why we don’t list a “best wallet” here

Wallet features, maintainers and names change, and a recommendation hard-coded on a meme website goes stale fast. The Zcash ecosystem directory is kept up to date and marks which wallets are shielded by default. Your wallet’s own help pages are the source of truth for its buttons and settings.

Key takeaways

  1. Self-custodial means you hold the keys and the responsibility. Custodial means a company does.
  2. Zcash wallets don’t all offer the same privacy features. Check for shielded support.
  3. Your recovery phrase is your wallet. Keep it offline, and never type it into a website.
  4. Download wallets only from verified, official sources.
  5. Verify addresses before sending. Small test transactions prevent expensive mistakes.
